A Show of Hands

Monday 18th November, 2019 – Monday 6th January, 2020

Norman Rea Gallery, Derwent College, University of York, YO10 5DD

A Show of Hands’ celebrates one of printing’s most famous visual icons: the printer’s fist. The exhibition, curated by Tim Jollands, who runs Bath Spa University’s Michael Turner Albion Press Room, features more than 90 posters, books and related ephemera from letterpress printers from across the UK, most of which have been produced especially for this exhibition.

Each item offers a unique interpretation of the printer’s fist – humorous, colourful, playful, serious, thoughtful, or surprising.

Join us for our launch event on Monday 18th November. At 17.30, Tim Jollands will introduce the exhibition, with short talks from Graham Moss (Incline Press), Dr Holly James-Maddocks (University of York) and Professor Helen Smith (York / Thin Ice Press). The talks will be followed by an exhibition viewing, and a chance to visit Thin Ice Press from 18.30. Refreshments will be available. Please register for a free ticket.

Talks will be in the F.R. Leavis Room, and the exhibition is in the Norman Rea Gallery and Salon. The F. R. Leavis Room and Norman Rea Gallery and Salon are both in Derwent College L Block on the Heslington West College (in Zone 5 on the map at https://www.york.ac.uk/map/). There are entrances to L-Block next to the Courtyard bar, and the Department of English & Related Literature (both of which are on google maps). The events will be well signed from both ends of L Block, and there will be staff and students on hand to help out.

The Norman Rea Gallery is open 9.00-5.00 every weekday. If you are travelling from off campus, please contact Helen Smith or the Norman Rea Gallery Committee to check that the exhibition will be available to view.
