We’re also very grateful to Ian Stuart, who not only donated to the crowdfunder, but gave us an original printing of Thomas Gent’s The Ancient and Modern History of the Famous City of York, allowing us to reunite the book with what is very possibly the press it was printed on, all the way back in 1730.
Although the crowdfunder has ended, the project continues to have high running costs. Further donations will help us to purchase materials and equipment, employ a member of staff, train undergraduate and postgraduate students, and open the printing studio up to a wide public. We also need funding to better understand and properly conserve Thomas Gent’s early eighteenth-century printing press — the basis of our reproduction wooden press.
