The Fair

We are interested in the interdisciplinary space that printmaking provides, reflected in the diverse range of practitioners and publishers exhibited at our events.

Crossing between illustration, textiles, graphic design, photography, poetry and comics, the curated event champions the authentic, the handmade, the emerging and established talent from across the UK working in the context of print and self-publishing.

See https://www.print-stuff.co.uk for more information.

Talks and Workshops

The fair will also feature a free public programme of talks and workshops. Hear about our work on Saturday 4th May, 14:00 – 14:45.

An Introduction to Thin Ice Press: Preserving, Reshaping & Inspiring

Lizzy Holling of Thin Ice Press

Thin Ice Press is the newly-built in-house printing studio in the Department of English and Related Literature at the University of York. This talk will introduce the press and its role as a unique resource for teaching, practice-led research and publication. Our iron presses chart the evolution of print from 1838 to 1926 – offering students the opportunity to experience the relationship between writing and printing practices and respond to a resurgent interest in traditional printmaking methods. We are also currently working to extend the timeline of our presses back to the early 18th century by building a replica eighteenth-century wooden common press. The press, based on the deconstructed remains of one owned by the York printer Thomas Gent, will allow us to preserve and share this lesser known aspect of York’s history.
