Letterpress Workshop: Getting it Wrong
A great opportunity to get hands on and learn how to set and print metal type in a fun workshop with our Director, Helen Smith! This workshop is open to everyone from absolute beginners to experienced printers, and is a great way to find out more about the history of printing while developing your skills.

Wood Type Posters
Come along to our fun evening workshop to print a one-of-a-kind poster using wood type. During the evening, you'll learn about York's fascinating history of wood type manufacture and type specimens, as well as the basics of poster printing and design. We'll experiment with colours and hand inking. You'll finish the evening with a unique souvenir and a passion for print.

In this two-hour session, you will get the chance to set a line of metal type, see what it means to lock up a forme, and try your hand printing with a tabletop Adana press. If you’re looking for an in-depth introduction to letterpress printing, this course is for you. This course will give you the necessary skills to initiate your own projects, and the confidence to troubleshoot problems when they arise.

Thin Ice Press: the York Centre for Print is home to an impressively large collection of wood type. In this three-part workshop you'll explore the collection to design and print your very own A3 posters. Select three large letters, get to grips with our powered proofing presses, and experiment with overprinting in three colours: yellow, magenta, and cyan – the essential colours for process printing.

The Complete Adana Workshop
A one-day course for aspiring printers who have, or want to work with, an Adana printing press. In a small group setting you will learn the basics of letterpress printing and how to use and maintain an Adana. You can bring your own press along for servicing and leave the workshop with a restored Adana and the skills needed to establish your home studio.
The course is suitable for beginners and those with some experience who are looking to take their skills to the next level. A light lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Japanese Bookbinding
During this three-hour workshop, we'll explore traditional Japanese binding techniques. We’ll provide an introduction to the tools of bookbinding, cover grain direction, and practise different types of visible stitching. You'll leave the workshop with your own unique, hand-bound book using washi-style paper and knowledge of the versatility of Japanese bookbinding.

You will come away with a set of prints, and your carved linocut block which you can use to make more prints in the future.
This is a lovely, calm creative activity, and an opportunity to socialise in a relaxed setting. Once you've been taught the basics you are free to work at your own pace and make your work as simple or detailed as you wish. The workshop includes all materials required and no previous experience is necessary!
