Welcome to the original Thin Ice Press
we launched thin ice press in 2017…
… transforming an empty study room at the University of York into a thriving print studio! Since its launch, Thin Ice Press has developed to become the UK’s leading letterpress teaching and research facility with a distinctive literary emphasis. Students in the Department of English and Related Literature, and across the University, can join us to get hands on experience of printing the old-fashioned way.
Our Work
The Press charts the evolution of print from 1838 to 1926 and a project to build a replica wooden common press extends this timeline back to the early 18th century.
It offers students the opportunity to experience the relationship between writing and printing practices through publication, practice-led research and offers dedicated third-year and MA modules.
