Past, Present and Future: the Histories of Printing in York

  • York Explore Library and Archive Library Square York, YO1 7DS (map)

Printing in York has a long and distinctive history. Join Helen Smith, Director of Thin Ice Press: the York Centre for Print to learn about Europe's earliest wallpaper, how a book can be a magpie, entrepreneurial widows, printing on ice, type made of Viking wood, and much more! As well as learning about York's first five hundred years of printing and bookselling, and finding out about the City's lively current printing and printmaking scene, you can find out how Helen and her colleagues are planning to make old-fashioned print endure for another half millennium! Attendees will take away a unique printed souvenir of the occasion.

Helen Smith, is Professor of Renaissance Literature at the University of York. She is an expert in early books and printing and a leader in practice-led research, with a passion for letterpress.
