DeLittle was one of only a few wood letter manufacturers in the UK, based on Vine Street in York. View part of this unique collection at Thin Ice Press: the York Centre for Print and celebrate an extraordinary part of York’s print and design heritage.
Founded in York under the name of the Eboracum Letter Factory in 1888, DeLittle’s was one of the UK’s leading wood letter manufacturers, and the last manufacturer of wooden type in Britain before it closed its doors in 1998. In the late 1990s the entire stock and contents of the DeLittle factory was transferred to The Type Archive in London with the aim of becoming a working archive.
The exhibition features Robert James DeLittle’s hand-crafted office, an unusual pantograph, and a wood letter delivery cart once used to wheel type around York.
